Pastor

Willem Romeijn

Pastor Willem Romeijn has been serving at Spanaway United Methodist Church since 2013.  Originally from the Netherlands, he and his wife JoDene have been serving within the Methodist Church for many years.  His wife is currently serving at Sunrise UMC in Federal Way.  Willem enjoys meeting new people and when possible, talking with them about the good news of the gospel, spending time with his family, swimming, reading, studying and traveling.  One of his hopes is that there will be a renewed emphasis on small group ministry in United Methodist Churches since the Christian Gospel was originally spread through small groups/ house churches.  Willem is happy to be serving the community of Spanaway and Spanaway United Methodist Church and looks forward to seeing you soon.

Administrative Assistant

Susie Olson

Send Email  •  (253)537-5134

Susie is in the office Monday through Thursday from 9-1 to greet you or help answer your questions.    She has been working at Spanaway United Methodist Church for about 6 months but brings with her many years of church involvement.  Her strengths include organization and a friendy demeanor.  When she's not serving SUMC she enjoys sewing, reading and taking walks.

Lay Servants

This group is comprised of several lay servants/ speakers  within the church, including Al Harmon and Ed Root.  Lay Servants/Speakers are people who are commiting themselves to go through a certification process within the United Methodist Church.  They are available to speak during the service, to lead small groups and to help with the Pastoral care of the body.

Director of Christian Education

Laura Nicholson

I am actually "Rev. Laura Nicholson" Direction of Christian Education....  I am an ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church (retired but that doesn't seem to be the case)!

Since retiring from Public Education as an Elementary Librarian part-time and Christian Educator, part-time, I became a Master Gardener thru WSU, thus my interest in all things growing, esp. gardens.  Currently I co-manage Brookdale Elementary School Community Garden, manage the SUMC garden, am part of the Master Gardener's Children's Garden Program and then there is my big home garden. SmileSmileSmile

When it isn't gardening season I love to sew and quilt with many projects going to the Battered Women's Shelter in downtown Tacoma. I have made over 30 quilts and one year made 106 quilted Christmas Stockings for the kids there.

I have been married for 51 years to an incredible man whom I met while attending the College of Idaho.  We have one daughter and two sons; three granddaughters and three grandsons who range in age from 13 to 21.

Gary and I came to Spanaway UMC in July of 2014 with the Parkland UMC family after moving to Tacoma in 1972.  We were members of St. Paul's Church in Tacoma from 1989 - 1998 where I was Youth Leader for six years.  I have taught every grade level of Sunday school from two year-olds thru adults as well as taught in and directed numerous Vacation Bible Schools since 1969.

In 2007 I went with 9 other women from the Pacific Northwest Conference on a  3 week UMC mission to The Democratic Republic of the Congo where we took hygiene items, paper, materials and sewing machines. While there, we were able to teach women, who were learning English, how to sew so they could make a living.  We also visited Jamaa Letu, the UMC's girls orphanage and the highlight of the trip was meeting the two girls Gary & I sponsor.
