Staff - Parish Relations

Staff- Parish Relations is our Personnel Committee and supervises the Pastor, Administrative Assistant and other paid Staff; assists the District Superintendent  (DS) in times of pastoral changes; gives guidance to the Council and Trustees in their supervision of the of the staff and reviews staffing policies.

Samara Jenkins

Pastor Samara Jenkins has been serving at Spanaway United Methodist Church since 2021.  Samara was born in Nebraska, raised in Arizona, called ot ministry in Ohio, spent year in the desert of Las Vegas and most recently, a year in beautiful Wyoming! She is the mom of 6, and bonus mom of 6, making an even dozen. All but one of the children are grown and scattered throughout the Midwest, the South and the Southwest. She and her husband, Antwone, will make their home in Spanaway with their son Elijah, who is 11, and her mother, Jacque Stillman. Samara is happy to be serving the community of Spanaway and Spanaway United Methodist Church and looks forward to seeing you soon.

Choir Director

Valerie Chittick

Valerie Chittick grew up in the Spanaway United Methodist Church while attending Spanaway Junior High and Spanaway Lake High School.  She continued on to the University of Puget Sound where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and her Masters of Arts in Teaching.  Valerie is starting her 16th year of teaching and is currently employed by Sumner-Bonney Lake School District in an elementary music classroom. She is happily married with two fun, beautiful and active kids, Amelia who is 11 and Brandon who is almost 4. Want to share your gift of music with her or would like to grow in music, say hi on Sunday or feel free to join choir practices on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM or Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM. She would be delighted to have you join our pleasant choir or even share music with her!

Lay Servants

This group is comprised of several lay servants/ speakers  within the church, including Al Harmon, Ed Root & Amani Tamaalii.  Lay Servants/Speakers are people who are commiting themselves to go through a certification process within the United Methodist Church.  They are available to speak during the service, to lead small groups and to help with the Pastoral care of the body.

Sunday School Superintendent

Uaina Toleafoa- Tamaalii

Uaina (wine -ah) is our wonderful Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. She is married and has 4 children, many "adopted" children, 3 grandchildren, and a plethora of "adopted" grandchildren as well! She is also chair to our Family- Fellowship Team and the hostess for funerals, memorials, and weddings. During the summer she also puts together exciting Vacation Bible School sessions for not only the children of Spanaway UMC but for the children in our community. She takes time every week to prepare a lesson for our older Sunday School children (Preschool - Elementary ages). In Uaina's class, you can count on your children being welcomed, well- cared for, loved and educated about how much God loves them. When she isn't at church, she loves spending time with her family and laughing, reading a good book, gardening, chatting with her kids, and even enjoys her Korean drama TV shows. Say hi to her on Sunday and enjoy a laugh or two with her!

Nursery Attendant

Carolynn Tamaalii- Anderson

Carolynn is our amazing nursery attendant! She is engaged (soon to be Anderson. We're just celebrating early!) and has a 5 year old son with her fiance. She is the second child out of 4 from her parents, Amani & Uaina. She is passionate about children, her family, the mission of our church and loves a good laugh and all around joy. When she isn't at the church, she is out spending time with family, exploring new places and doing new things in her local area or just relaxing at home with her son. She serves weekly in the nursery to make sure that our youngest members are cared for while their parents/ guardians are able to fully enjoy the Worship Service. Come meet her after the service on Sunday and see what joy and blessing she truly is!

Church Council

Church Council is responsible for the overall vision and mission of Spanaway UMC, sets priorities for ministry, evaluates ministry effectiveness and approves the budget. 

Meeting: Last  Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm.

Trustees Chairperson

Allison Adams

Allison (Allie) Adams is the fun, caring lead of our Trustees team.  She grew up in Pennsylvania but has made the Pacific Northwest her home since 2006.  She is a Journeyman Building Trades Sheet Metal Worker through Local #66 and brings her expertise to SUMC.  If it needs fixing, maintained, or refilled let Allie know and she will make sure it happens.  Our church is now over 115 years old and there is always something that needs to be done.

She is also responsible for the paintings downstairs in the nursery, hallway and restrooms, she completed it during the shutdown of 2020 for coronavirus.

The Board of Trustees are the legal corporation of the church and responsible for care of the physical property, insurance matters, building use policies and legal matters.

Meeting: 6:00pm 1st Wednesday of the month via Zoom

Finance Committee

Finance Team is responsible for the day to day financial operations of the church.  Creates the annual budget, authorizes special offerings and fundraisers.

Meeting: 2nd Wednesday at 6:30 pm

Worship Team

Worship Team assists the Pastor in planning worship, both weekly and special events, and the care and seasonal decoration of the sanctuary. 

Meeting: 3rd Wednesday at 5pm
